MISSION & OBJECTIVE

SF Shorts: The San Francisco International Festival of Shorts is a premiere festival that strives to screen a range of films so wide viewers will have trouble getting their arms, and heads, around it. SF Shorts is not afraid to push boundaries, to expand genres or to challenge audiences - visually, narratively, socially and intellectually. In 2007, we were honored to screen 60 films from around the globe, and we gave away over $16,000 in cash and prizes. Our mission is to provide an interesting mix of programming from which our audiences will be surprised, educated, entertained and inspired.

SF Shorts celebrates the rebellious nature at the heart of all great filmmaking. It's about grabbing someone by the eyeballs and making them think, feel and react. It's about what people see every day but now stare at in wonder. We want to enrich our audiences, to inspire them, to make them think about something that they could carry forth into their lives. We want them to be surprised in a meaningful way.

SF Shorts proves that entertainment can have human value. SF Shorts explores a wide mix of genres without circumscribing them into niches. Those type of boundaries don't interest us. We love to watch films rub up against each other to catalyze new meanings. Short films often get short-shafted elsewhere... they're just opening acts for the features. We're interested both in the new artists and the mainstream filmmakers who want to do something different.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

The festival's programs are screened throughout San Francisco in a variety of locations to bring our films to a diverse audience. The 2007 festival screened at the historic 500-seat Victoria Theatre in the Mission District and at the independently-renowned Red Vic Moviehouse in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. Venues for the 2008 festival are yet to be announced.

Past SF Shorts jurors spanned all areas of filmmaking, sharing multiple Academy Award nominations and premiere festival screenings, and have included: Baker Bloodworth, Academy Award nominated producer/writer for The Walt Disney Company; documentarian Gail Dolgin, Sundance Film Festival award winner, Academy Award and Emmy Award nominee; experimental filmmaker Jay Rosenblatt, Guggenheim and Rockefeller Fellowship recipient; Jeff Goodby, Clio winner and founding partner of the advertising firm, Goodby, Silverstein & Partners; and Philippe Denis, CG Supervisor on Shrek the Third, the third installment to the Academy Award-winning animated film series. The 2008 festival judges are yet to be announced.

A Director of the festival will watch every entry. All films selected for the festival are automatically eligible for a variety of honors and prizes awarded by the festival organizers, jurors and audience.

GENERAL RULES

For entry, preview submissions may be on DVD, VHS and minidv (all NTSC only). Festival exhibition is by video projection only. All submission media should be clearly marked with title, WAB tracking #, total running time and email address.

DO NOT mail or ship your entry by any method that requires a signature on our end.

Additional packaging tips: Plastic CD jewel-cases often crack in shipping, at times damaging DVDs. Most promotional packaging and materials will be discarded by the festival as part of our entry organization system. We prefer online digital press-kits and recommend that you have at least one film still online. Clearly mark your tracking number on everything, especially on tapes and disks; and include your tracking number in any email correspondence.

Successful entrants will be notified by July 15th, 2008.

Please ensure if you are submitting a film that contains copyrighted material by anyone other than yourself, that you have obtained festival clearance for that material used. By entering your work, you agree to this and the responsibilities involved.

Films screened in the festival should be presented in English. For all dialogues presented in other languages, the festival will accept subtitling and/or dubbing.

All films selected for the festival are automatically eligible for a variety of honors and prizes awarded by the festival organizers, jurors and audience.

Film Length up to 30 minutes.

All student entries must be accompanied by a photocopy of a current student I.D..
